City wants to double parking ticket costs

The City of Edmonton wants city councillors to increase the cost of parking tickets to prevent drivers from leaving their cars in no parking zones.

According to the city, officers handed out around $15,500 worth of tickets to drivers in no parking zones in 2012. Fines for vehicles parked in spots after time expired have increased by 50 per cent over the past five years.

Mayor Don Iveson says this would not be a cash grab.

“If the deterrent is working, you actually see less revenue collected over time,” he said. “I’m happy to ensure we measure that.”
