INAAM (RAHIME) TARRABAIN
Inaam (Rahime) Tarrabain was born in Saadnayel, Lebanon where she lived with her parents and siblings until she immigrated to Canada to visit her sister,Ramzie. Ramzie was married to Mahmoud Mohammed Tarrabain, a well-known pioneer and businessman, who lived in Edmonton. Inaam travelled by ship, a journey which took twenty-one days. Inaam had never ventured further than the borders of Lebanon. She spoke no English at the time. She was travelling alone and there was no one from her home village to accompany her. She, however, managed to communicate by gestures, watching what other people did and conversing with the Lebanese people she met for the first time. Her journey started in Beirut,with stops in Greece, Italy, Spain and than Canada. Her port of entry was Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She continued to her final destination by rail to Edmonton. When she arrived, Inaam lived with her sister, Ramzie, and her family. She met many people, in Edmonton, many of whom she remains friends with. She met one special man, Mohammed Sid Tarrabain ( Jim) who had come to Canada in 1950, where his father, Sid Mohammed Tarrabain, who had immigated to Canada in 1927,lived. Mohammed had moved to Lac La Biche where he started a mink ranch. In 1954, Inaam and Jim married. In Lac La Biche. Inaam and Mohammed worked hard expanding their ranch and cultivating award winning mink. A family of ten, made up of one son and nine daughters would be raised by Inaam and Jim. The children's names are: Sid, Fatima, Seham, Tammy, Mysoon, Soad, Amane, Hyatt, Heyam and Senia. In 1974,the family bought the Gulf gas station and service station which has undergone many changes and is presently a Dodge dealership- Tarrabain Motors,Jim's Carwash and Automotive Service Station in Lac La Biche. Inaam has been in Canada for sixty-four years and still lives in Lac La Biche surrounded by family and friends. ** We would like to thank Fatima ,one of Inaam's daughters, for providing this story to us.
